Rulez of the Roux

Nothing stirs debate in South Louisiana kitchens more than how dark to take your roux. This unique hand-painted “cheat sheet” celebrates the sacred base of Cajun cooking, charting the classic shades from white, blond, brown, to dark brown. Ingredients are simple but powerful: one part fat, one part flour. It’s both art and cultural history—a reminder of family, gumbo pots, and football season when roux is slowly stirred on the stove.

This piece is created with Watercolor paints and Acrylic pen, then sealed with a high-gloss sealant on heavyweight watercolor paper.
